The appointment of a seasoned banker as the cabinet secretary (aka Minister) for health has brought with it mixed reactions. The most disappointing for me has been the reaction from doctors, who have basically rejected the nominee, referring to him as an “outsider”. Don’t get me wrong, I am a member of Kenya Medical Association and have the greatest respect for my fellow doctors. But in this case, I beg to differ and declare that they do not speak for me when they say that the docket should by headed by a medical doctor.
I agree with the decision made by the newly elected President and Deputy president; the Ministry requires a manager, and with his vast expertise in this area, I believe Mr. James Macharia is as qualified as they come. I was cursing as I took a 40 min bus ride, a distance that would take 20 mins if I was driving, or 10 mins if I was in a matatu (14-seater public service vehicle) in Nairobi. However, I couldn’t help but notice two stark differences; I was NOT hanging onto the seat infront of me for dear life, neither was I fervently praying to arrive at my destination safely (I did that in the morning, in case you were wondering). My mind was at ease enough to drift to other thoughts.
I marvel daily at the discipline I see here; drivers obey traffic rules! They stop at red lights even on a sunday when there is no other car in sight; they stop for pedestrians to cross the road; and even the pedestrians wait patiently for the walk sign and they cross at the designated areas; and passengers queue…
